Information about the Twente Walking Network
The Twente Walking Network covers a total of 3,500 kilometres. It encompasses the most beautiful walking routes, footpaths and long-distance walks that were already available in Twente, but has been linked together to form the Twente Walking Network via 1,275 junctions. The walking network was developed in a number of phases, the first of which began as early as 2007. At present, you can walk 455 different routes on the Twente Walking Network. The routes are connected via these junctions and are signposted in both directions.
Short walks, half-day and full-day walks, multi-day hikes or themed routes: everything is now possible in Twente. Almost all through-routes for long-distance walking are included in the walking network.
What are the recommended walks in the Twente Walking Network?
The Walking Network is so extensive that only a few recommended walks are listed here. The Walking Network includes a circular walk along the outskirts of Enschede. Enschede is the largest city in Overijssel, but it is also a city with a rich cultural history dating back to 1119. Unfortunately, the old town was largely destroyed by fire in 1862. One unique building that has survived is De Grote Kerk.
Ootmarsum is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Netherlands. Founded in 900, it was granted town rights in 1300 and has not really grown since then. Ootmarsum feels like a sort of open-air museum, with the Roman Catholic church being one of its main attractions.
The village of Delden is known as a villa village, situated in beautiful natural surroundings, and is a lovely place for a walk. Delden has a number of places of interest, including the Salt Museum and the Old Blasius Church.
Nature and landscape of the Twente Walking Network
The Sallandse Heuvelrug is undoubtedly Twente’s main natural attraction. Although not officially part of Twente, it is included in the Twente Walking Network. Alongside the Sallandse Heuvelrug, Twente is nonetheless a region with outstanding scenic qualities. It offers a variety of hedgerow landscapes, heathland and numerous green estates.
